THE PERENNIAL GARDENS
The Seedums Garden Club of Cheboygan plans, plants and
maintains the beautiful flowers and shrubs around the museum complex
grounds. The plants are a mix of
annuals and perennials which include blooms for every season from the earliest
crocuses and daffodils to late fall geraniums. Planters are located at the front entrance to the jail/residence
and the front entrance to Spies Heritage Hall. Flower gardens include landscaping by the museum signs, along
the front and side of the jail/residence and the memorial rose garden east of
the log cabin. Take a few minutes to
sit on the bench and enjoy the view.
In
the spring of 2006, garden club members incorporated into the
gardens an area where a tree had been removed. They
added a lattice divider with clematis
and climbing roses and a wooden well filled with blooming wave
petunias. A memorial rock and stepping stones are
prominently featured near the well . This area has
become the focal point of the garden on the south wall.
Some of the perennial plants whose beauty enhance the
grounds and that provide varying displays throughout the spring, summer and
fall are: tulips, irises, coral bells, mums, peonies, hostas, day lilies,
forget-me-nots, feverfew, bee balm, and naturally various seedums. Leggy white liatrus simulate the white
barred windows while tall yellow heliopsis form a ladder up the jail.
Blooms are used for arrangements in the museum
buildings. Seedums members also cut and
arrange flowers to be shared with Cheboygan Memorial Hospital Extended Care Unit, Hospice
House and Cheboygan Health Care Center.
